So  I was taking a look at the official Zelda site for Oracle of Ages and…

“Why do they always steal my title :(?”

“Official” sites are notorious for these kind of mistakes, screwing up characters’ bios and even their genders surprisingly often.  They’re usually terrible sources for canon info since they so often screw up important details.

(Kindly reminds everyone of the time Namdai’s US site listed Anise of Tales of the Abyss as a man…)

Heh, remember when Game Informer declared that Ghirahim was a woman? Fun times.

I remember when the Prima strategy guide said the true final boss of Kirby 64 was a friendly background element in the sky world.

The entire true endgame wasn’t even in the guide IIRC.

The spiritual sequel to Hey You Pikachu, this. The game is about playing with a baby Pikachu who got interested in your new TV, which shows a range of networks hosted by Pokemon. Here Pikachu is watching Smoochum Shape Up, which shoes off various exercises.

Like HYP, it has some interesting implications about the Pokemon world in general, but the game itself isn’t objectively that great, though it isn’t exactly bad, either. Is very silly and very cute.

There is one very good reason Pokemon fans should acknowledge Hey You, Pikachu! more, and that is the PokeHelper.

The PokeHelper is, in the broadest sense, A GODDAMN INTERSPECIES TRANSLATOR.

INTERSPECIES.

TRANSLATOR.

This is Star Trek shit, man. You are testing out a device that allows Pokemon and humans to communicate, or at least allows humans to talk to Pikachu.

This is YEARS AND YEARS before N, mind! We are talking just-before-Gen-II stuff.

I just can’t get over how cool the PokeHelper is.

I was eight years old when Hey You, Pikachu! was released in America in 2000. Even at eight years old, I understood that microphone-to-video game technology was not perfect, as it was relatively new. (Hey You Pikachu was the first video game I’d ever seen that used a microphone…. Please let me know if it wasn’t the first one ever.) I knew that the microphone technology would get better, and hoped that there would be a sequel once it did.

It’s been thirteen years, and video game microphone technology is much better…. and I’m still waiting for my improved Hey You Pikachu sequel.

(Pokepark doesn’t count. It’s cute and I liked it, but it doesn’t count.)

Nintendogs. Nintendogs is the HYP sequel, in terms of “romp with a cute virtual pet that you can use voice technology to play with, brought to you by Nintendo”.

And Pokemon Channel was a straighter sequel, though the gimmick was TV watching and the GCN’s clock instead of the VRU.

It just has a really crappy camera (especially at the start), awful graphics, fiddly controls, and a gimmicky voice recognition system that barely works. Still. Awesome.
