Here’s a piece I created for Gallery 33’s upcoming video game boss/final level show, which opens February 14th! Go check it out if you’re in the area.
I’ve always been a huge metroid fan, and drawing samus is actually how I got into drawing in the first place. Composing ridley was super nerve racking, his body is so spindly and weird, but I’m happy with how it turned out!
Mmm, I feel like chewing on Other M again. Let’s talk about how to set up your protagonist being rescued without making her look like a dumbass.
Now, Samus has actually been rescued by people at least twice before Other M: once in canon in Metroid Prime 3, and once in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Both scenes are done much better than the infamous Other M Ridley scene. And, in fact, both scenes do also involve Ridley, too.
I’m going to let the Other M scene more or less speak for itself this time. It’s been analyzed to death, and may we whip the corpse forevermore, but I want to talk more today about why the other two scenes worked than about why this one failed.
do you ever just hate a bad guy so much you literally yell at the screen
“YOU LITTLE SHIT”
and then you sit back and realize
wow they’re meant to be hated they’re doing their job good, well done wow what a good bad guy to actually incite hate rather than pity and make you want to beat them for reals no backsies
and then you love that character because they’re a little shit but they’re a good character
A Ridley commission for my buddy Paris. Get those missiles ready!

I honestly can’t tell if you’re pulling our legs or not, Holly.

Kirby’s Return to Dream Land music - 015 Boss Lobby (by KirbyPeachfan39)
I really like Kirby music
Especially when it sounds bizarrely similar to Metroid music
You listen to this, see if you hear bits of Ridley’s theme, too
On the shortlist of things I liked/didn’t mind about Other M, Vorash tops it, but Ridley’s life-cycle is in second place.
It did go way too fast to keep up suspension of disbelief, and there are problems with how its implemented in the story to say the least, but I don’t actually mind the concept of Ridley metamorphosing. Yeah, it’s fuckin’ weird, but the thing of it is, Ridley is an alien. He’s supposed to be weird. Even if the rest of Other M didn’t happen, Choogle and El Pollo Loco can stay.
Along with Vorash. Because seriously. Lava whale.
Really the only bad thing I can say, or at least thing I personally find inadequate, about the two Harmony of a Hunter albums is that there aren’t any standout remixes of Ridley’s battle theme that aren’t hidden inside medleys.
Those hidden ones are pretty sweet, though.
So I bought Super Metroid for the WiiU, actually this is the one title I wanted to get out of the 30 cent games that Nintendo have been giving us. And it has gave us graceful memes of how new players to the game are more helpless than a kid who struck out in Tee-ball.
-Joking aside, I finished the game at 3:59 with 49% completion. I’m not amazing at the game, but I can blaze though it normally. Even spent some time drawing on Miiverse, and I had my fun drawing them. Which I did poke fun at the “Metroid” Samus name joke.
I have a weakness for the “welcome to die” meme…
Mind uploads really do explain a hell of a lot about the Metroid series. Take Riddles, for example.
"Why does nothing seem to kill Ridley?" That’s an incorrect phrasing of the question. "Why doesn’t Ridley stay dead”, now, that’s how you should ask.
He’s died several times. The Pirates just have backups and have no qualms with growing him a new body and overwriting the clone’s brain with Ridley’s. Meta Ridley was, presumably, a crack at Science when he survived.
